Stumbling blocks

From stumbling

The stumbling blocks?

No, no one will trip up on them

They are planted at ground level in the pavement

But the names on them and the characters

Stamped on our conscience:

“born, deported, murdered”

And the places:

“Łódź, Minsk, Riga, Theresienstadt,

Auschwitz, Chelmno, Majdanek, Sobibor, Treblinka…”

We are looking for you,

whose names are written in the archives and in heaven.

We give you,

in places of fear and persecution,

we recognize you

in your children and grandchildren.

The stones speak of you,

every day.

You are not forgotten.

We would like to introduce you to a completely different kind of project.

In May of this year, for the first time, in a “fictional encounter” as part of a Stolperstein laying ceremony, we took on the roles of two survivors who were able to escape and are now returning to their former hometown.

We ask for fictitious encounters between people who have fled Germany and are visiting their former hometown – what memories emerge in them, what thoughts and feelings emerge…?
